Republic Square (Hanrapetutian H'raparak) (17)

During reconstruction of Republic Square in 2003, excavations of an older layer of the city were made, uncovering the ruins of vaulted basements with cross-beam arches. These buildings once boasted a beautiful combination of black and red tufa with vaulted ceilings and were ruined in the early 20th century.

The excavated buildings are now covered by a thick layer of sand, conserved for future generations. Тhey represent an important pe-riod in Armenian secular archi-tecture and are valuable glimpses into the architecture and lifestyle of the18th-19th cc Yerevan.

The excavation was carried out under the auspices of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Science and the State and Cultural Monument Preservation Agency.
